They breathe soft fire and the earth heaves its revisions.
No two schools of Art ever completely agree with one another. Most movements throughout history are a reaction to and rejection of the previous. It’s a kind of binary switch. You can’t be this if you’re doing that.
I find the truth of my lived experience challenges this “all or nothing” ideology. My aim is to commingle the vocabularies of the art genome and celebrate the resulting pluralism. No manifesto, no hard line.
Like tributaries that feed the river minerals from outlying areas, these works have brought together a blend of techniques, materials, and buried narratives. I have collected, painted, salvaged, obliterated, and assembled my way to this body of work. There is passion, despair, humor, and rawness present.
These works are conversations and they breathe soft fire.
Through my work, I explore the aggregation of form that emerges from reactive and gestural associations in mark-making and assemblage.
This results in a sort of co-mingling of the art genome. Through it I am positing an argument against binary ideologies, yielding to plurality and its non-exclusive perspectives. I am taking differing schools of thought and putting them together in a room to talk without disavowing one another.
Granville
bio
Granville is a Portland,Oregon-based artist who has called the PNW home for over a decade. He graduated from the Memphis College of Art in 2006 with a BFA emphasis in Sculpture.
Granville works in a non-linear and reactive way through the use of his ever- evolving visual vocabulary to explore abstract intimations of a pluralistic and dynamic world view. Creating assemblage constructions and mixed media paintings, he explores the conversations between materials and the interstices that permeate them.
